Francis F. “Hoagy” Carmichael, Jr., 82
Francis F. “Hoagy” Carmichael, Jr. (Ret. SMSGT, MAANG), 82, of West Wareham, died Thursday, July 17, at Sippican Healthcare Center in Marion. He was the husband of the late Elizabeth M. (Robbins) Carmichael.
Born in Boston, he was the son of the late Pauline & Francis F. Carmichael, Sr. Mr. Carmichael graduated from Jamaica Plain High School and attended St. Michael’s College in Vermont.
Mr. Carmichael began his military career in the U.S. Army before he transferred to the U.S. Air Force. He served in the Air Force until 1961 when his service was then transferred to the Massachusetts Air National Guard. He retired from the MAANG in 1992 at Sr. Master Sergeant.
Frank was active in many military organizations and town committees. He was Past Commander of the American Legion Post # 220 in Wareham, Past District Commander, American Legion District 10, Massachusetts, President of the Air Force Association of Mass., member of 40 & 8, Voiture # 49 of Plymouth, member of Wareham-New Bedford Lodge of Elks # 73, and member of Benjamin D. Cushing V.F.W. Post # 2425 in Marion. He also served six years on the Wareham Finance Committee, was a member of the Wareham Democratic Town Committee, was a voter registrar for the Town of Wareham, served as Veteran’s Agent for UMass Dartmouth, and served on the Massachusetts Joint Veterans Council for National Cemeteries.
He is survived by his daughter, Donna Bronk of Wareham; two sons, Kenneth J. Smith, Jr. of Epsom, NH, and Scott Carmichael and his wife Susan of Sebastian, FL; his longtime companion, Patricia Zimmer of W. Wareham; his brother, Richard Carmichael of Middleboro; three sisters, Ann Maloney and her husband Joe of Mashpee, Pauline Buckley of Winchester and Eileen McGonagle of Carver; six grandchildren, Thomas Bronk, Timothy Bronk, Cassie Whitney, Dwayne Smith, Kenneth Smith and Eric Cosman; six great-grandchildren and one great great grandchild and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, the late Stephen Smith and his sister, the late Patricia Carmichael.
His funeral will be from the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway (Rt. 28), Wareham on Tuesday, July 22 at 8 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick’s Church, High St., Wareham at 9 a.m. Interment will be in Agawam Cemetery, Wareham. Visiting hours will be Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
