Friends and food at the Council on Aging

Nov 21, 2019

There was a full house at the Council on Aging Thursday as seniors gathered to enjoy a Thanksgiving lunch of turkey and gravy, mashed potatoes, peas, and cranberry sauce.

“It was very tasty,” said Marjane Ackerman, who comes to the COA every day.

Volunteer Mario Granata noted that so many people had come for lunch, he had to sit off to the side to eat after serving food.

Anna Balano is another daily visitor to the center, where she is a part of the social day program.

“The trick is to get everybody to agree,” said Bolano. “Our motto is peace and love.”

The group participates in a number of different activities, including tai chi, arts and crafts, games, and chair yoga (“So we don’t fall on our behinds,” Ackerman explained.)

The Council on Aging offers lunch every weekday except for holidays, and also coordinates Meals on Wheels. Those eating lunch at the Council on Aging are asked to donate $2.50 and make a reservation two days in advance.

Nutritional Director Cheryl Johannessen is currently looking for drivers to help deliver Meals on Wheels, which is about a two hour a week commitment. Those interested should call her at 508-291-3100, ext. 6514.

On Monday, Nov. 25, a fashion show will be held at about noon after an 11:30 lunch.

The COA’s Christmas Party will be held on Dec. 19, and on Dec. 20, a ham dinner will be served for lunch.
