Friends of Veterans on the move to bring war memorial to Wareham

Mar 24, 2017

Nearly 3 million, 58,307 and one.

Respectively, those numbers represent how many: members of the U.S. armed forces fought in South Vietnam, names are inscribed on the Vietnam War Memorial, Wareham residents (Richard H. Arruda) died in battle.

Here’s one more number – 49,000. That’s how many dollars the Friends of the Wareham Veterans Council must raise to bring a scaled down version of the monument to town this summer.

On Thursday night, council members continued with their fundraising blitz by holding a “meet and greet” in the Social Harmony Mason Lodge. The public was invited to learn more about the wall, which is scheduled to be in town for five days starting Aug. 17.

A half size replica of the memorial located in Washington, D.C., "The Moving Wall" is made up of 74 aluminum panels and 253 feet long and contains the names of those who lost their lives in the Vietnam War.

Between now and Aug. 17, the council has five fundraisers scheduled. The next one is a fashion show, set for April 9 from 12:30 to 4 p.m. at Salerno’s Function Hall in Onset.

Council President Jean Sarnelli said Thursday’s event was meant to be an informal affair, designed to educate people about the wall, drum up interest and maybe collect some donations.

“We do need people to support us and help us raise as much money as we possibly can,” said Sarnelli.

The wall has garnered support from some out-of-town groups, including the Middleboro-based chapter of the Patriot Riders of America. A motorcycle group, its members lend support to veterans and veteran-related issues whenever possible. A small contingent from the group attended the meet and greet. Among them was Paula Jean and her pet, Cooper the Motorcycle Dog.

“We’re here to get a better idea of everything that’s going on when it comes to the Moving Wall,” said Jean. She added that the group is set to provide a motorcycle escort for the wall when it rolls into town.

“If there’s ever anything we can do for veterans, we’re there,” she said.
