Friends of the Wareham Free Library announce 3 fundraisers and 1 book drive

Purchase a raffle ticket, donate a children’s book or attend a holiday fair – there’s no shortage of ways to support the Wareham Free Library in the next couple of months.

On Tuesday, Friends of the Wareham Free Library President Priscilla Porter told Selectmen about three upcoming fundraisers and one donation drive.

“Hopefully, we’ll do quite well,” said Porter.

On Dec. 3, a queen-size quilt donated by the Busy Bee Quilters Guild will be raffled off at the library. Tickets are on sale now for $5 and may be purchased at the library, located at 59 Marion Road.

Porter said a jewelry and accessory sale will be held starting Nov. 17 at the library. The sale returns after a three-year hiatus.

“It was a huge success,” said Porter. “People loved it.”

Porter said donations of jewelry (broken items are OK), hats, gloves, gently used purses and scarves are now being accepted at the library.

New this year, an appraiser will be on hand for people curious to know how much their jewelry is worth. Appraisals will be conducted on Nov. 19 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Other jewelry sales dates and times are: Nov. 17 from 4 to 6:45 p.m.; Nov. 18 from noon to 5 p.m. and Nov. 19 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Looking ahead to next month, Porter said the annual holiday fair will be held on Dec. 3 from 9 to 1 p.m. in the library.

Porter said her group is reviving a tradition that fell by the wayside due to a lack of donations. In past years, kids attending story time at the library were given books.

“Unfortunately, we don’t seem to get as many children’s books so we have been unable to do that,” said Porter. “I’ve been there when the kids have gotten the books and it’s unbelievable how happy they are. It’s like giving them a special gift.”

Currently, a donation box is set up inside the Riverside Cafe on Main Street. Porter said the Friends hope to establish other donation boxes throughout town in the next few weeks.
