Frosty's train ride and Santa's Village bring out the holiday spirit

Nov 24, 2012

Frosty’s Christmas Train rolled through Wareham and in to Santa’s Village on Saturday and Sunday, to the delight of a crowd of youngsters, many dressed in their jammies.

“The magic of the season starts with this,” said Rose Berry of the Wareham Village Association, which organized the event. “This is when you know the holidays are here.”

On the train, Santa’s elves took orders for Santa, which they promised to pass on once they returned to the North Pole.

The elves entertained the kids throughout the train ride with songs such as "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" and "Up on the Housetop." Frosty made his way through the train cars, waving to the kids and taking pictures, before heading back to his North Pole abode to avoid melting.

At Santa’s Village, in and about the Old Meeting House on Main Street, Santa was waiting at his Wareham home. He brought his animals with him for the children to pet. Included in the menagerie: two alpacas, a rooster, and a goat.

As the train pulled into the village, cries of “It’s Santa’s house!” came from the train car.

Tammy Chester came from Westport with her kids for Frosty’s Christmas Train ride and Santa’s Village.

“It was definitely better than the Newport one,” said Chester. “I would say the train ride was the best part.”

The weekend rides got off to a rocky start on Saturday with late departures and on-track delays.

Cape Cod Central Railroad, which operates the trains, is also running its own Polar Express trains out of Buzzards Bay for the first time this year. With Frosty's train and the Express sharing 6 miles of track, a safe distance had to be maintained between the trains, explained Ryan Coholan of the Cape Cod Central.

“Saturday was not the best, but Sunday was good," he said. "Whenever there’s a problem, we do our best to adapt to it as quickly as possible.”

President of the Wareham Village Association Anthi Frangiadis released an apology to those who had to deal with delays.

“The Wareham Village Association extends its deepest regrets to our Frosty's Christmas Train customers who endured long waits and interruptions," Frangiadis said.

Even with long waits in Saturday's frosty weather, the children were happy when the trains arrived.

“It’s like anything, you go with the flow,” said Berry, adding that her family looks forward to the event. “My grandson talks about it all year.”
