Garden Club adds color to Main Street

Careful when parking your car on Main Street, you don't want to run over recently planted flowers.

Main Street is brighter following weeks of hard work by members of the Wareham Garden Club.

Artfully arranged flowers, planted all along the road, and are now being maintained by members on a weekly basis.

“That included the planting, the weeding, the watering, and the watering, and the watering,” said Sandy Slavin, emphasizing flowers thirst. Slavin is co-chair of the Community Preservation Committee and a garden club member.

On dry weeks, it can take up to 10 gallons of water per bump-out to get the flowers going.

The purpose is to liven up downtown, especially in barren areas like the bump-outs on the sidewalks, she said.

According to Slavin, “very few people like the bump-outs” and so the club decided to “brighten them up by planting annuals.”

A team is assigned to each bump-out, and they must maintain it throughout the season.

The club has been maintaining a few planters for several years, but they've been limited to a small section of Main Street.

This year, Community and Economic Development paid for the two planters in front of the post office and A.D. Makepeace purchased the plants found on Main Street.

“All Wareham Garden Club has to do is provide the woman power,” said Slavin.
