Gatemen coverage is a cut above the rest
In the words of Wareham Gatemen President Tom Gay, "WCTV is the ESPN of the Cape League," and they would like to keep it that way.
For the fifth summer, Wareham Community Television is broadcasting all Wareham Gatemen home games live on TV and online. WCTV also puts on a weekly Gatemen news show, "Around the Horn" and films interviews and behind-the-scenes videos with Gatemen coaches and players, some of whom will go on to star in the major leagues.
Gatemen home games are broadcast live on channel 97 on Comcast and 28 on Verizon. The games are also streamed online and uploaded to Youtube.
The man running the show is WCTV Production Coordinator Warren Randolph, who is in his fourth year doing so. Randolph said with players coming to the Gatemen from around the country, putting the games and highlights online provides a way for family members to see their kin play ball without having to fly across the country.
Randolph said he and WCTV crew members took two days to string the 2,000 feet of cable necessary to wire all four cameras and be able to broadcast the games. Three cameras are located around the left field area at Spillane Field to follow the play and the fourth camera is located behind the home plate backstop to give viewers the closeup shots seen in professional games.
Randolph said he has a crew of five interns who man the cameras during the games. He said is more involved in the actual taping during the beginning of the season, but by the end he is only there mainly to observe.
Randolph said the teaching aspect of the job is one of the parts he enjoys the most.
"All the interns are passionate about it," he said. "Some have never even picked up a camera before and at the end of the season they're following fly balls like pros. Being able to see the difference between the first broadcast and the end of the season is amazing."
While Randolph and his WCTV crew provide the picture, the Gatemen on-air team bring the broadcasts to life.
The broadcasting duo of Mike Monaco and Sean Malone will travel with the Gatemen to all 44 games this summer and call each and every one of them, and though there isn't video for the away games, they still provide the audio.
Monaco, a senior at Notre Dame, is in his second year as a Gatemen broadcaster. He said the bulk of the broadcasters work is in doing research on opposing players and keeping track of how all the players did in their spring college seasons and how they're doing on the Cape throughout the summer.
"We have to be able to present those story lines," he said.
"It's been a blast so far, getting to be on the air basically seven times in seven days," said Malone, who recently graduated from the University of New Haven and is in his first year covering the Gatemen. "It's not your typical nine to five."
While Monaco and Malone are busy digging up information on opposing teams and past performances, on-field reporter Megan O'Brien is focused solely on the Gatemen.
"I try to know the ins and outs of the Wareham players," said O'Brien, who is a junior at Northwestern University and in her first year covering the Gatemen.
O'Brien conducts in-game interviews with players, coaches and fans as well as producing content in between games for things such as the "Around the Horn" roundup show.
Add everything together and it's easy to see why Wareham delivers the best coverage in the Cape League.
"Every year we try to keep adding more to it," said Randolph. "We want to keep up our reputation as the best."
