Gatemen fall to Newport in Tuesday pre-season game, Opening Night this Friday
Operating without its full roster Tuesday because many players are on college teams vying for the College World Series, the Wareham Gatemen fell to the Newport Gulls 4-2 at home on Tuesday in the team's first pre-season game of the 2011 season.
The game featured an appearance by Wareham's own Ryan Delgado, an outfielder who currently plays for Wentworth Institute of Technology. Delgado graduated from Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical School in 2009.
The Gatemen have one more pre-season game on Thursday, June 9 at 6:30 p.m. against the New Bedford Bay Sox in New Bedford. The game has been dubbed the “Clash of the Coast." The Gulls and the Bay Sox are part of the New England Collegiate Baseball League.
The Gatemen kick off the regular season this Friday at Spillane Field for Opening Night against the Hyannis Harbor Hawks beginning at 7 p.m.
The game will be called by Boston Red Sox public announcer Carl Beane, who has also announced the last few Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star games at Fenway Park.
"It’s a dream come true by finally announcing a league game at a site of a Cape Cod Baseball League game and I am looking forward to meeting everyone in Wareham," Beane said in a statement.
State Trooper Dan Clark, "The Singing Trooper," will sing the National Anthem. Fans are asked to wear red for the Cape Cod Baseball League's "Red Shirt Friday" to honor the country's military personnel across the globe.
Spillane Field is located directly behind the Town Hall parking lot at 54 Marion Road.
