Gatemen season ends with 6-0 loss to Falmouth

Aug 11, 2011

The 2011 Wareham Gatemen season came to an end as the Falmouth Commodores swept the Western Division Finals with a 6-0 win on Thursday, August 11.

The Commodores moved on to face the Harwich Mariners in the Cape Cod Baseball League Championship. The Mariners then swept the Commodores for the championship title.

On Wednesday, August 10,  the Gatemen were just one strike away from winning game 1 of the Western Division Finials against Falmouth. The Gatemen broke their six-game winning streak, losing 4-1 in the 10th inning.

Pitcher Jake Boyd (Stetson), in his second Cape League start after signing with the Gatemen in early August, kept Falmouth at bay for 8 innings before the Commodores tied it up in the 9th. Falmouth scored the winning runs in the 10th to take game one.

Boyd, a relief pitcher at Stetson and in the Northwoods Summer Collegiate League earlier this summer, struck out 6 and allowed only 4 hits during his 8 innings of play.

Despite not going all the way, the Gatemen had an impressive summer. The team rose from the third place to second late in the season and went on to sweep the Bourne Braves in the playoffs.

The Wareham Gatemen organization was presented the Cape Cod Baseball League's Commissioner's Cup for the third time in the eight years of the award's existence.

The Commissioner’s Cup is presented to the team that demonstrates the highest level of integrity and professionalism on and off the field, ensuring and enhancing the championship caliber of the Cape Cod Baseball League.

Cape League Commissioner Paul Galop noted that Wareham was a unanimous choice for the 2011 Commissioner's Cup despite solid efforts by other franchises.

"The team's professionalism really set the standard this year, and that is quite a tribute as several of the Cape Cod Baseball League teams participated heavily in their respective communities when not playing baseball," said Galop. "These types of student-athletes are exactly what we want representing the Cape Cod Baseball League and our hats are off to the job well done by the Wareham Gatemen."

The Cup winner is determined by numerous factors including such mundane matters as whether required paperwork is filed in a timely fashion and how well games are conducted. The on-and-off field conduct of the players is another factor, as is the frequency of arguments with umpires and the need for disciplinary action.
