Apr 30, 2014

This past weekend saw the opening for the Gateway Babe Ruth Regional League's season, with over 35 teams participating in the growing league.

The Gateway Grizzlies defeated the Bourne Bandits with big hits by Dan Roe (Carver) going 3-for-3, Will Hopkins (Rochester) going 3-for-3, Kyle Brezinski (Rochester) going 1-for-2, and Marc Nelson (Carver) going 1-for-2.

Nelson delivered the game-tying hit in the 5th inning and the Grizzlies took the lead for good in the 6th inning on two Bourne errors. Dan Roe got the game ball with a solid day at the plate and two scoreless innings to close-out the Bandits.

The Gateway Varsity Renegades defeated Sandwich Breakers, and the Wareham Cubs went to 2-1 by defeating the Carver Crusaders and Old Rochester Bulldogs but losing a nail-biter to the Gateway Cougars.

Gateway Cougars (2-0) defeated both the Cubs and the Carver Crusaders.  They meet the Mashpee Hurricanes next.

The Old Rochester Bulldogs (0-1) lost their first game of the season.

The Gateway Regional league is open locally to players from Rochester, Wareham, Carver, New Bedford, Acushnet, and Fairhaven, among other towns including those on Cape Cod.
