George J. Mendes, Jr., 76, of East Wareham, died Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at his home after a long illness. He was the son of the late Louise R. (Rose) & George J. Mendes, Sr.

A graduate and a standout athlete of Wareham High School (Class of 1957), he lived in Wareham his entire life. He also was football coach for the Wareham Tigers football team for many years. Mr. Mendes worked for many years for Snow and Jones, Inc.  He retired as manager of their Falmouth location in 2011.

He was a communicant of St. Patrick’s Church in Wareham and enjoyed gardening, yard work, fishing, clamming, crabbing, quahogging and travelling.

Survivors include his children, Wayne A. Mendes of Savannah, GA, Anita L. Mendes and Leandra M. Mendes both of E. Wareham, George J. Mendes, III and Steven T. Mendes both of Onset, and John J. Mendes of Lawton, OK; his sister, Judith M. Barnett of Wareham; his brothers, Norman E. Mendes of Wareham, Ronald Roach and Paul Barnett both of New Bedford, and Antone Barnett and Donald Collins, both of CA; Christopher M. Mendes of Wareham, Jonathan S. Mendes of IN. 18 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his brothers, the late Alfred Johnson, Clarence Johnson, Richard Augustus, Thomas Carroll and Richard Barnett and his sister, the late Rosemarie Dias.

His funeral will be at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway (Rt. 28), Wareham on Monday, April 28, 2014 at 9 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick’s Church, High St., Wareham at 10 a.m.  Interment will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Wareham.  Visiting hours will be Sunday from 4 – 8 p.m.
