Girls breeze by Dedham 68-42
Wareham girls coach Bob Rojik was happy to get this first game out of the way, and even happier with the final score. After trailing briefly in the first quarter 8-7, his #1 seeded Viking girls dominated the Dedham girls defensively and raced to an easy win in their first post-season game of the year.
The newly crowned South Coast Conference champions took awhile to find their game, and they allowed Dedham to stay close up until the middle of the second quarter. But with 3:00 left in the first half, they had stretched their lead to 10 points, 22-12, and they were off and running. Most of the Vikings' points came from easy layups generated through a combination of good passing and forced turnovers. Wareham expanded the lead to 28-14 at the half.
Dedham came out firing at the beginning of the second half, hitting two consecutive 3-point shots to close the margin to 28-20. They would get as close at 5 points (30-25) before the Wareham offense and defense came alive again, converting six consecutive layups, and rolled to a 45-33 third-quarter lead. They spread the ball around to five different players in this run, and this set the tone for a dominating fourth quarter in which they outscored Dedham 23-9, leading to the final score of 68-42.
The Vikings were led in scoring by Lexie Silvia with 16 points, followed by freshman Amber Filkins and senior Kira Correia with 11 each.
Wareham will play again on Saturday at 6:00 PM in Wareham against Archbishop Williams, who crushed Burke on Thursday 83-50.
