Girls win a nail-biter against ORR 39-38

The Wareham girls basketball team won a thriller against ORR in the final game of the regular season Friday night, by a score of 39-38.

The two schools have spilt the season series, with each school winning a game on its home court by a single point.

The Lady Vikings took the lead early in the second quarter and never gave it up, but ORR was always hot on their heels.

Wareham led at halftime 18-17 and stretched the lead to 37-30 with just over two minutes remaining.

As ORR stormed back, Wareham Junior Tieyanna Yancey had one of the most important plays of the game, hitting two clutch free throws to put Wareham up by four with eight seconds remaining.

Those foul shots came up big as ORR would go on to hit a three at the other end of the court, bringing them within one point. But it was too little too late as Wareham successfully inbounded the ball with less than a second remaining, securing the victory.

Leading the way for Wareham was Kia Fernandes with 14 points. Yancey would finish with 12 points.

Wareham coach Dave Brogioli said he believes his team will likely end up with the eighth-seed in the playoffs and play at home either against Norwell or a third meeting against ORR.

He said he would know the final seeding by Saturday afternoon.

"I'm pretty happy with this team, a lot of people considered this a rebuilding year," said Brogioli. "So everything after this is gravy."
