Gleason Family YMCA brightens up the night

Dec 6, 2019

Families and friends suited up on the evening of the annual Gleason Family YMCA's "Snowy Night, Bright Lights" run/walk on Friday night.

The snow wasn't present, but participants didn't mind as they joyously traveled around a path in the woods surrounding the Y, which was illuminated by Christmas lights and soft tea-light-sized lanterns.

When Senior Program Director Melissa Dyer created the "Snowy Night” walk eight years ago, she was trying to come up with a fun, family and pet-friendly event to raise funds for Annual Campaign, which helps pay for Y membership and classes for community members who otherwise would be unable to afford them.

“Most people don't get outdoors in the winter because of the weather so we figured we offer them an incentive,” said Dyer. “The trail walk gives them something beautiful to look at and in addition, it gives them prizes.”

Participants could walk up to five miles, with additional raffles available for ambitious walkers who tacked on more laps.

“This event is really for all different types of health-seeking individuals: For those who just want to stroll and enjoy the pretty evening and it’s for those who want to get a good workout,” said Dyer.

Aside from a workout and a beautiful sight, goers received a goodie-bag with snacks, sang Christmas carols, and toasted nearly 50 s’mores by the bonfire that night. Lots of hot chocolate, coffee, and soup were were imbibed to stay warm.

“This is a great way to get the holiday season started,” said participant Emily Davis. “I could really see that YMCA put in a lot of effort to organize such a well-thought-out event.”

This year's event should bring in about $1000 towards the Annual Campaign.
