The first Daniel Taber Memorial Golf Tournament had over 150 people swinging clubs Saturday morning in memory of a good friend.

Taber, a Wareham man who passed away last year at age 49, was a lover of golf who worked at the Little Harbor Country Club, where the tournament was held. He was formerly a member of the golf team at Wareham High School.

His mother, Hazel Taber, said the tournament felt like a “living wake” for her son.

“I’m just overwhelmed with the camaraderie of the people who are remembering my son,” Hazel said.

Taber's siblings, friends from high school, neighborhood friends and even relatives from California spent their day on the green remembering their friend and his love for the sport. Several teams were turned away because the tournament was filled to capacity.

“It’s people from so many walks of life,” said his sister Sue Taber. “He would have been humbled to see the people that came out.”

Proceeds from the tournament, raffle and meal provided by Mumma Marys went to the Wareham Free Library and Wareham Middle School’s CARE Program, which provides students in need with food each weekend.

Donna Bronk, who called herself Taber’s “second mother,” said the charitable tournament made sense since Taber was such a generous man.

“Danny cared about people before himself, so this seemed fitting,” Bronk said.
