A great day to 'Escape the Cape'

May 31, 2014

After a wet and wild race last year the sun came out for the hundreds of athletes competing in the Escape the Cape Triathlon Saturday morning

"The weather was really great today," race director Tim Richmond said. "We really pulled a rabbit out of a hat last year."

The temperature at the start of the race was in the mid 50's, great for endurance competitions, but Richmond said the wind made the swim through Onset Bay tougher than normal.

"The beginner swimmers had some trouble," said Richmond. "Even some of the elite swimmers were slowed down by a minute on their swim."

He said there was just over 500 people at the start line on Shell Point.

The athletes plunged into Onset Bay for a 1/3-mile, point-to-point swim to the Onset Pier followed by a 10-mile bike leg through Onset Village returned to the pier and finished with a 3.1-mile run along the East River and finished in the park next to the band shell.

The overall winner of the race was Brian Macilvain from Weston, who completed the course in 51:32. Tim Snow of Brockton was second with a time of 52:25. Mike Emmons of Bellingham, Mass., was third in a time of 53:02.

Carolyn Pfalzgrap of Weston was the first woman across the line in a time of 58:02. Kim Shattuck was from Bridgewater was second with a time of 1:02.19 and Caitlin Campbell from Boston finished third in 1:02.24.

Chris Moulding was the first finisher from Wareham, crossing the finish line in 1:07.40.

Competitors were streaming through the finish line in Prospect Park throughout the morning as music played and finishers and spectators enjoyed food by Marc Anthony's.

"Everything is going really smooth," said Richmond.
