Habitat for Humanity to dedicate Minot Forest home to late Wareham resident

Cindy Worrell may be gone, but her memory lives on in many charitable ways. The latest is a Habitat for Humanity home along Minot Avenue.

The home, said Cindy’s husband Geoff Worrell, is an existing one, but will be dedicated in Cindy’s name by the nonprofit Christian organization, which builds homes for those in need.

This will be the second home in the area Habitat for Humanity has dedicated to a specific person or family. The first, Habitat for Humanity’s Buzzards Bay Area Executive Director Christine Lacourse said, was in Marion.

The Worrells were on the board for Habitat for Humanity, but, when they became involved in the mortgage industry, they could not continue, due to potential conflicts of interest.

“We could only be volunteers, so we put on home shows at Tabor Academy [in Marion], and were active in raising money for Habitat for Humanity through galas,” Worrell said. “We did that for three or four years.”

Until last year, there was a family living in the home, but they left the area for personal reasons.

“The home has been vacant for about a year. It’s frustrating, because it is a resource a family could use, so they are renovating it,” Worrell said.

Lacourse said the organization is partnering with Wells Fargo on the project, which is donating 10 employees’ time, for a total of 60 hours’ worth work, to the renovation. She said the family will get a completely revamped house.

“Everything will be freshly painted,” Lacourse said. “They will have a new floor, and new appliances.”

She said the organization wanted to dedicate the house to Cindy, and to the family, because of everything the family has done for Habitat for Humanity, and for the Wareham community.

“We thought that since they live in the area of Minot Avenue, and since we would be rehabbing the house, that it would be great to dedicate it to Cindy, and Geoff, and the whole family,” Lacourse said. “We wanted to do something special for Cindy and Geoff, because of everything they do for everyone else.”

Lacourse said the organization is in the middle of the family selection process. Families who are interested in applying may contact the office at 508-758-4517, and may submit applications until April 1.
