Health Board talks trash with haulers

Nov 16, 2016

Wareham trash haulers were reminded to report how much garbage is being trucked away or risk losing their permit to operate.

During its ongoing efforts to update a slew of local regulations, the Board of Health said none of the three disposal companies represented at its Wednesday meeting were in compliance with one section of the current bylaw. Representatives from Republic Services, ABC Disposal and Cavossa Disposal Corp. attended the meeting.

According to the bylaw: “Each permitted hauler shall submit monthly reports listing the tonnage of refuse and recyclables that has been collected.”

“We used to get reports and then we stopped getting reports,” said Health Agent Bob Ethier. “Haulers may have changed and sometimes they don’t know.”

In reviewing the bylaw, board members voted to switch the regulation from monthly to quarterly reports, but reminded haulers they must start submitting them again.

“Monthly sounds like a lot to me,” said Chair Amy Wiegandt.

Before the vote, board members also discussed recycling with the haulers. Town regulations state that every hauler must provide an opportunity for residents to recycle alongside trash services for the same price.

All three representatives assured board members that rule was being followed.
