Hearing to reestablish Main Street gas station postponed
The Zoning Board of Appeals postponed the hearing of Ossama Mohamed's request to reestablish use of the gas station at 307 Main St.
The gas station is officially considered abandoned since a property is deemed abandoned after two years of disuse. Since gas stations are not permitted under any zoning district in Wareham because of a town meeting decision, Mohamed has to apply for a special exception to be allowed to reestablish the gas station.
The hearing was scheduled for Wednesday night, but at the meeting, Mohamed's lawyer said he only filed a request for a use variance, but he now wants to request a use variance, a special permit and/or an appeal of the building inspector's decision. That way, if a use variance is not granted, there may be another option to allow Mohamed to reopen the gas station.
Since all three of these items were not mentioned in the original application, the Zoning Board said the hearing would be postponed to a later, undetermined date.
Mohamed, who also owns Sam's Gas at 274 Marion Road, currently owns the Main Street property and has paid taxes on it for more than two years. He has maintained the property, fixing the concrete and potholes at the gas station. Now, he is hoping to start making money back on the business.
Zoning Board members said they hope the hearing will be held within the next few weeks.
