High School Baseball keeps swinging
The Wareham High School baseball program has struggled to attract participants over the past few years, said Head Coach Chris Cabe.
“We have seventh graders playing on varsity, which is unheard of,” said Cabe. He added that three quarters of his roster is made up of seventh, eighth and ninth grade players.
The team has picked up four wins over 12 games this season. It’s a better record than in previous years, including a 1-19 season in the spring of 2023.
Cabe attributes this year’s success in part to the school’s switch from the South Coast Conference to the Mayflower Athletic Conference, where the competition is “not as tough,” he said.
Cabe said participation and skill level has declined for the past five or six years, since the Covid pandemic impacted the operations of the Wareham Little League.
“Most of my time is spent teaching the kids the fundamentals of the game,” said Cabe.
However, “This year, the energy with the kids is better than it was last year,” he added.
