High school still cleaning up weeks after blizzard
The gym floor was not Wareham High School's only casualty in the blizzard of 2013.
In addition to the more spectacular pipe burst that flooded foyer and gym, a crack in a smaller pipe in the library sprayed water onto computers, keyboards, and monitors, causing what Principal Scott Palladino characterized as "minimal" damage.
But, the real damage occurred when electrical power -- out for several days during the storm -- was restored. A power surge fried the heaters in the portable classrooms, as well as photocopiers, security cameras, and other electrical equipment.
"There's a whole list of things we're dealing with. We had more damage from when the power came on than from the flooding," said Palladino.
He said on Monday, Feb. 25, that most of the electrical work is done, but the heating and cooling systems still need work. The school is in the process of filing insurance claims to cover the $50-$70,000 worth of damage Palladino estimates was done by the storm.
"In a period of 24 hours, that amount of damage is crazy," the principal said.
