Historical Society rededicates Fearing Tavern garden

Aug 23, 2016

On Sunday, members of the Wareham Historical Society and the Wareham Garden Club celebrated the restoration and rededication of an herb garden at the Fearing Tavern.

The tavern has always had an herb garden outside the back kitchen door, said Angela Dunham, president of the Wareham Historical Society.

In past years, the garden fell to disrepair due to lack of funding and volunteers. With the help of a grant from the Massachusetts Master Gardeners Association, Sullivan Lawnscapes, master gardener Kathleen Coyle and volunteers from the Wareham Historical Society and the Wareham Garden Club, the garden is back in shape and ready to thrive.

The original dedication of the garden was for Betty Wright, a past president of the historical society. A stone marker sits in the corner of the garden commemorating her.

This new dedication, set into a piece of granite but not yet placed in the garden, was in memory of all Wareham Historical Society members who've passed away.

Dunham said one the most important parts of the garden is its educational aspect.

"On the weekends, especially for the children on their field trips, we are able to educate them as to what a colonial garden was," she said. "It was a tradition that people had their subsistence garden to supply the kitchen with healthy food. Herbs were used for culinary and medicinal purposes."
