Hunt for ghosts with paranormal investigators this weekend

Oct 10, 2011

On Saturday, October 15, both amateur and seasoned paranormal investigators will have the opportunity to hunt for ghosts in some of Wareham’s most historic buildings.

The event, called Haunted History Night 2011, is being put together by the crew of “Spooky Southcoast” radio and Jeff Belanger, author of more than a dozen books, founder of Ghostvillage.com (the web’s most popular ghost site) and host of the “30 Odd Minutes” television show.

The centerpiece of the event is the chance to investigate the Fearing Tavern. Originally built in the early 1690s, the Tavern has only been investigated by a very select group of paranormal investigators. “Spooky Southcoast” hosts and Wareham residents Tim Weisberg, Matt Moniz and Matt Costa were amongst the first ever allowed to conduct an investigation in this historic location, and the evidence they captured was amazing. Ghostly voices caught on tape but not heard audibly, strange balls of light emitting from antique toys and numerous other experiences were reported in just the first night alone.

“It’s truly a unique location. It’s lived through every single day of American history, and was already almost one hundred years old when our country was born,” Weisberg said. “While we want people to come and investigate the paranormal, it’s also about learning about our past. We have a saying—come for the ghosts, stay for the history.”

The Fearing Tavern was recently featured on “30 Odd Minutes” and has been written about in books such as “Ghosts of the SouthCoast,” “Ghosthunting Southern New England” and “EVP: Massachusetts’ Ghostly Voices.”

Haunted History Night 2011 will also include the chance to investigate the Old Methodist Meetinghouse (built in 1835), the One-Room Schoolhouse (1825) and the Union Chapel (1880).

Beginning at 6 p.m., attendees will hear lectures by Belanger, whose latest work is the revised edition of “The World’s Most Haunted Places”; “Spooky Southcoast” host and author of “Ghosts of the SouthCoast” Tim Weisberg; and Andrew Lake, author of the new book “Ghosthunting Southern New England.” Then, they will be served dinner prepared by the Spooky Crew at the Mill Pond Diner, before breaking into small groups to participate in the investigation.

“We like to bring together seasoned investigators with those who might be doing it for the first time, or even those who may be skeptical about the paranormal,” Weisberg said. “We believe the best way to learn more about this field is to examine and work alongside others with different approaches than your own.”

The event will run until 2 a.m. Plenty of free parking is available at Mill Pond Diner, before the event begins at the Old Methodist Meetinghouse at 6 p.m. Tickets are just $99, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Wareham Historical Society to help benefit these and other historic locations in town.
