After receiving the necessary permits, an indoor golf facility offering simulators, leagues and lessons is hoping to open in East Wareham in time for the start of its January leagues.
During its Tuesday, Nov. 3 meeting, the Select Board voted unanimously to approve alcohol and entertainment licenses for a new Champions Indoor Golf location.
Champions plans to operate eight golf simulators in a 4,700 square-foot space, with proposed hours of 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. The business would open in the Jordan Plaza at 3119 Cranberry Highway in Unit 4.
Matthew Porter, Champions' attorney, told the board that Champions Indoor Golf opened its first location in Plymouth in 2022 and has since expanded to multiple locations. The East Wareham facility would be the seventh.
"It's a very well-oiled machine at this point," Porter said, adding that Champions "works well with all those communities."
In addition to recreational golf, the business offers leagues, lessons and youth programming at its other locations, which they plan to offer in Wareham as well.
Champions also plans to partner with local restaurants rather than operate its own kitchen. Customers would be able to order food for delivery or bring food into the establishment, while prepackaged snacks would be available onsite.
Porter said the model has worked well at the company's other locations, allowing the business to support neighboring restaurants.
"They're very excited to open up a new location," said Porter.
The select board thanked Champions for choosing to do business in Wareham.
"It looks like a really interesting, fun place to be," said chair Sarah Corbitt.
Although the board approved the alcoholic beverage and entertainment licenses, the alcohol license must still go before the Massachusetts Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission before alcohol sales can begin.
Champions hopes to open in time for leagues scheduled to start the first week of January. The business may open for golf before receiving its alcohol license.
