Ira 'Sonny' Crocker Carman, 90
Ira "Sonny" Crocker Carman, 90, of Wareham, died April 16, in Tobey Hospital. He was born on September 20, 1922 the son of the late Ida and Frank Carman.
He was predeceased by his son, William Carman, his brother, Walton “Tink” Carman, his sister, Virginia Pruchnik, his first wife Eleanor (Slater) Carman and his second wife, Olive May (Wrightington) Carman.
He was born in Marion and lived in Pennsylvania before moving to Wareham many years ago.
He was a World War II Army veteran who was honored several years ago by receiving medals long overdue him.
Mr. Carman worked for Superior Fuel Company for more than 40 years before retiring. He also drove a bus for Almeida Bus Lines for more than 20 years, driving to New York World’s Fair many times. He worked as a handyman groundskeeper at Tobey Hospital during its construction
He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Carman; a granddaughter, Dawn Murphy, a grandson, Kevin Carman; a great-grandson, Dylan Murphy; 2 sisters, Gertrude Frances Shuhart and Dorothy Waugh both of Fla.; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and 3 special great-nephews, Gideon, Gabriel, and Simon Cully, who made him smile these last 3 years.
His funeral will be held at 12 p.m. on Friday, April 19, in the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway, Wareham. Burial will follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
Visiting hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.
