It's on! Boys volleyball team will play this year

Feb 5, 2013

The Vikings boys volleyball team has been working hard off the court to raise money to fund their season after it was cut from the budget, and it looks like their work is going to pay off.

Wareham High School Athletic Director Steve Rumbolt says there will definitely be a boys volleyball season this year.

Boys volleyball Coach Ben Kaeterle has been helping the team raise money to pay for the season, and has even offered to volunteer his time as a coach if there's not enough money to cover his salary.

“I’m very excited," Kaeterle said. "It seemed like a long shot, and I want to thank everybody in the Wareham community for how generous they’ve been.”

He says the team will head to the court determined to prove that the volleyball program deserves to stay on the schedule.

"The challenge is to focus," said Kaeterle. "In the off-season, we didn’t really get to focus on playing" because the players were busy raising money.

In addition to the volleyball team, the girls and boys cross country teams were cut due to budget constraints.

One of the factors in deciding which teams would be cut was the level of enrollment, which was relatively low for both sports, said Rumbolt. Whether cross country will return next year is still up in the air.

“I’m not sure it’s going to be possible," Rumbolt said.

The volleyball team is continuing its fundraising efforts. A dance and concert to benefit the team will be held at Wareham High School from 7 p.m. until 11 p.m.

There will be a DJ and a performance by Push 4171, which is fronted by Wareham High School volleyball player Teddy Mathews.
