James B. Newman, Jr., 82, of Wareham died unexpectedly Friday, August 1 at Tobey Hospital in Wareham. He was the husband of Marylou (Monahan) Newman.

Born in Medford, he was the son of the late Helen L. (Quinn) and James B. Newman, Sr. A resident of Medford for 40 years, he moved to Wareham in 1972.

Mr. Newman was employed as a postal clerk for the U.S. Postal Service and worked at the Main Street Post Office in Wareham. He retired in 1988. After his retirement, he served on the Commission on Disability for the Town of Wareham.

Mr. Newman was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and served during the Korean War. After his Marine Corps service, Mr. Newman served in the Mass. Army National Guard as a helicopter mechanic at OTIS Air Force Base in Bourne.

He was member and Past Commander of American Legion Post # 220 in Wareham, the Cromesett Tribe of Redmen No. 156, Disabled American Veterans and Korean War Veterans Association.

Survivors include his wife, Marylou of Wareham; his children, Marie Harrison and Paula Neal both of Medford, James B. Newman, III of Whitman, Kerri L. Newman and Ellen L. Newman both of Wareham and Mark Minghella of Wylie, TX; his sisters, Helen Bochley and Dorothy Burke, both of Medford and Mary Wilson of Malden; his brothers, George Newman of Watertown and Dennis Newman of Reading; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son, the late Jeffrey Minghella and his brothers, the late Leo, William and Bartholomew Newman.

His funeral will be from the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway (Rt. 28), Wareham on Thurs., August 7 at 10 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick’s Church, High St., Wareham at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Mass. National Cemetery, Bourne. Visiting hours will be Wed. from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
