John Jepson, 86

John W. Jepson, Ph.D., 86, of Marion, passed away on Sept. 19.  He was the husband of Joan (Lavalley) Jepson and son of the late Milton and Flora (Bennett) Jepson formerly of Briarwood Beach, Wareham.

John earned a bachelors degree from Northeastern University, his master’s and Ph.D. from Yale. He worked for Bell Telephone Labs., in underwater sound development for submarine warfare. In 1968, John joined Titleist Golf Div. as Director of R&D; he became vice president of operations and in 1982 was the executive vice president and general manager. He was affectionately called “Dr. Dimples.”  He became the executive vice president and general manager of the Rubber Division in 1984.

In 1990 John became the executive vice president of the Ben Hogan Golf Co. being responsible for many golf operations. John served on the Board of Directors of the National Golf Foundation and became chairman in 1987. John was a member of Descendants of Whaling Masters. He was the great grandson of Capt. John Maxfield Tinkham, of the Whaleship Charles W. Morgan.

John is also survived by his daughter Nancy Ellen Thompson and her husband John, his grandson: Jason R. Ryan, his great grandchildren: Benjamin, Jonah, Megan and Gabrielle.  He was the father of the late Robert Evan Jepson and brother of the late Ellen McLeod.
