June Francis McCahill, 90

Mar 19, 2013

June Francis McCahill, 90, a retired Tobey Hospital nurse, mother of seven, grandmother of 10, great-grandmother of one, swimmer, gardener, artist and shell-fisherman, died March 14, at her longtime home in Cataumet.

She was born June Cassels on June 30, 1922, and grew up on Taylor’s Point in Buzzards Bay, graduating from Bourne High School in 1940. She earned her R.N. from Massachusetts General Hospital, where she met her husband-to-be, John Frances McCahill. They lived in Washington DC and Occupied Japan before returning to Cape Cod for good in 1954.

Together, they explored nearly all of the Cape’s shore roads and beaches. June loved the water, especially Old Silver Beach and Wild Harbor in Falmouth and Patuisset in Pocasset, and was swimming through last summer.

John, her husband of 59 years, died in 2003. Their travels together had taken them to Ireland, all over Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Her sister, Justine Jarvis, predeceased her.

She is survived by seven children and their spouses: James Michael and Ilona McCahill of East Wareham; Margaret McCahill of Cataumet; Sean McCahill and Dianne Gerry-McCahill of Cataumet; Maire and Paul Cusson of Vernon, CT; Pastor Liam McCahill and Ruth Ann McCahill of Baltimore; Dr. Padraic McCahill and Sarah Morse of Easton; and Brendan and Lori McCahill of Falmouth. She also leaves 10 beloved grandchildren: Megan and Michael McCahill of Baden, PA; Sandra McCahill of Allston; Tomas McCahill of Falmouth; Aleena Cusson of Lexington; Kevin Cusson of Vernon, CT; Airman First Class Conor McCahill of Holloman AFB, NM; Eilish McCahill of Baltimore; and Ian and Andrew McCahill of Easton. She leaves one great-granddaughter, Elaine Summers of Baden, PA.

A celebration of June’s life will be at the Briarwood Conference Center, 586 Shore Road in Monument Beach, overlooking the waters where she went quahogging and oystering. The celebration will run from 4 p.m. to sunset on April 20. A short ceremony and toast will be held at 6 p.m.
