Kenny's Salt Water Taffy adds alcohol to menu

Onset summer staple Kenny's Salt Water Taffy will add beer and wine to its offerings, after the Board of Selectmen Tuesday approved a seasonal liquor license for the establishment.

"The way the economy has been for the past few years, we're trying anything," said Kenny's co-owner Louise Mastracchio.

Mastracchio and co-owner Joy Clarkson said that alcohol will only be served with food and customers will be closely monitored by staff to ensure that problems don't arise.

Concerns were raised about whether issues would be caused by customers leaving the premises and walking to the beach.

Selectmen approved the license on the conditions that the outdoor deck area be fenced off so that there is only one exit, to be monitored by an employee, so customers cannot leave with alcohol. A second exit will be allowed for busy times during events, but two employees will be required to monitor the area.

Residents and a Kenny's employee spoke in favor of the license.

"I know if they say they'll watch the people on the deck, they'll watch the people on the deck," said resident Susan Ricci. "I really think this is good for the business and the community."
