Kids discover wildlife during Onset Beach scavenger hunt
Even though overcast, rainy skies cast a grey pall over Onset, Thursday morning was a great time for a wildlife scavenger hunt on the beach, thanks to two conservation agencies and the Wareham Boys & Girls Club.
Led by Emily Fink of the Massachusetts Audubon Society and Michaella Sheridan of the Buzzards Bay Coalition, a small group of kids searched the shore for signs of life in the brisk spring air. Kids were given scavenger hunt cards listing different categories of things, including things the kids “liked,” three green things and one thing “that doesn’t belong” (such as trash). The activity continued when the kids made habitats for the creatures they found.
The first big find of the morning was a horseshoe crab discovered by Wareham Boys & Girls Club Director Ken Fontes. Another interesting find was an unknown “animal” that was eventually identified as a mass of fish eggs.
The excursion was part of the Wareham Boys & Girls Club’s “Kukoo” project, a series of educational workshops designed to get kids excited about the local environment.
