Kids go trunk to trunk for candy
Kids looking for the sweet treats of Halloween were offered an alternative to trick-or-treating at the annual Trunk-or-Treat event at Lopes Field in Onset.
The event is sponsored by the Onset Foursquare Church, as well as its sister church in New Bedford and Freedom Church out of Mashpee.
"We put it on so the children have some place safe to come on a night when bad things can happen," said Pastor Kit Dolan of the Onset Foursquare Church.
Participants decorate their vehicles with different themes, and there are carnival game and music as well.
"Good clean fun, food and, of course, candy," is what kids and family can expect, according to Dolan.
Dolan says that last year the event drew 900 people, and it just keeps getting bigger.
Debra Mendes of Wareham says she has come to the event every year since it began.
"I think it's great that they do this, and it looks like they're adding more," she said.
Her ten-year-old son Steffen Mendes said his favorite part was "The games. They have the ring toss [and] pick up the bottle."
Barbara Sullivan , director of the children's ministry at the church, said that while the church doesn't technically believe in Halloween, the event is about community not religion.
"We've been doing this because we're part of the community," said Sullivan. "It's not for us to dictate," what others believe.
