Soapy, muddy water and sticky, colorful popsicles were a treat for good behavior at Minot Forest Elementary as two third grade classes were surprised with these rewards Wednesday.

Two classes were recognized this year for following the school motto, “Respect, responsibility and kindness."

The school system to uphold this motto is called Positive Behaviors Interventions and Supports, or PBIS. Golden leaves are awarded to students who show respect, responsibility and kindness, such as holding a door open for someone. When a teacher, cafeteria staff or other support staff see good behavior, they can give a student a golden leaf.

Each classroom has a goal of receiving 100 golden leaves each week. When they do this, they are entered in a raffle to receive 20 minutes of recess the following week. Classes that enter the raffle but do not win that week receive a super leaf, which is placed on the door of their classroom. The class with the most super leaves is surprised at the end of the year with a special treat.

“This definitely helps to motivate kids to make positive choices,” said school psychologist Anastasia Lapointe. She said students are excited to show their parents when they receive these accolades for good behavior.

This year, Michele Latourneau and Susan Johnson’s third grade classes both had the most super leaves and were surprised with the slip and slide and popsicles during their extended recess.

Last year’s winning class was surprised by the Wareham Fire Department bringing a fire truck to the school and the year before a Perry’s ice cream truck pulled up to the school to offer cool treats.
