Library to host virtual must-reads programs

Feb 14, 2022

Readers can register online for any of the Wareham Free Library’s upcoming book talks, which will be held on Zoom.

The first talk starts at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 16 and features author Nicholas Basbanes’ book, “In Cross of Snow: A Life of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.”

The book examines Longfellow’s life and contributions to American literature through the man’s poems, stories and essays. Basbanes spent more than 12 years researching the writer’s life, including his letters, diaries, journals and notes, to finish the book.

At 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 22, Larry Tye’s “Demagogue: The Life and Long Shadow of Senator Joe McCarthy” will be showcased. The book serves as a biography for McCarthy, and is based on Tye’s exclusive access to the senator’s papers and transcripts of his Congressional hearings.

The last talk will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 23 and focus on Katherine Stewart’s “The Power Worshippers: Inside the Dangerous Rise of Religious Nationalism.” Stewart examines the Religious right as an American political movement bent on gaining power and imposing its ideals on society.

Those interested in listening in can register for any talk at the Wareham Free Library’s website.
