The Select Board voted during its April 12 meeting to approve Wareham Little League’s use of town roads for its annual Opening Day Parade scheduled for Saturday, April 30.

Little League President Quirino doCanto said the organization is rebuilding after the pandemic shut down the parade over the past few years.

“But we’re trying to bring it back this year,” he said at the meeting, “start to rebuild the program after a couple years off.”

doCanto said the parade route will be the same as in years past, starting at the Tremont Nail Factory onto Route 28 and then up Charge Pond Road.

The Select Board approved the parade’s use of town roads unanimously.

“It’s good to have something for the kids to do,” member Alan Slavin said. “We just need to do more and more of this, simple as that.”

The rain date for the parade is May 1.

Fundraising efforts

Separately, a fundraiser posted on GoFundMe on Monday, April 11, has raised more than $6,600 to update the Wareham Little League’s facilities.

The fundraiser’s description online states that the organization is working to revitalize the baseball field’s snack bar, after months of being unused and subject to vandalism. The webpage says that monies raised will go toward steel doors in the snack bar, a security system, refrigerators, freezers, plumbing and bathroom repair, cleaning and vandalism repair and restocking of the snack bar’s pantry.

“The snack bar is an essential source of revenue for our Little League,” the description reads. “At this time, we are unable to open the snack bar for the season, but with your help, we will have a chance!”

The GoFundMe was organized by Michelle Pina and Jared Gresh of Wareham Little League, according to the website.

As of noon on Friday, 29 people had donated to the GoFundMe for a total of $6,615 raised toward a stated goal of $5,000.
