Man charged with assault, animal cruelty released on bail
A Mashpee man who was arrested on seven police charges, including one felony animal cruelty charge, has been released from jail on $1,000 bail.
Jonathan Bader, 23, of 48 James Circle in Mashpee, was arrested on April 30 on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, threatening to commit a crime (murder), domestic assault, disorderly conduct, and cruelty to animals, after he allegedly injured a man and a turtle with a short samurai sword during a domestic altercation. He was arraigned in Wareham District Court on May 2.
Patrolmen responded to the incident just after 1 a.m. on April 30. According to the police report, Samantha Dione who resides at the Garden Homes North mobile home park said her boyfriend, Bader, had threatened her and two friends with a knife in a Kristen Lane trailer.
When police arrived at the trailer they discovered two men fighting. Police said Bader appeared “significantly intoxicated.” The second man is also suspected of drinking. The patrolmen found several large, empty liquor bottles in the trailer, according to the report.
Police said Bader injured the man’s hand with the sword and injured one of the pet turtles housed in the trailer. According to the officers, the turtle had a broken shell and was bleeding. Police said Bader had either thrown it against the wall or hit it with the sword.
Police estimated 15 animals were housed in the trailer including cats, dogs, lizards, snakes, and other turtles.
An animal control officer took the injured turtle to a veterinarian and several of the other animals to a shelter.
A pre-trial hearing in Wareham District Court is scheduled for June 17.
