Manuel J. Sylvia, Jr., 92
Manuel J. Sylvia, Jr., 92, of Wareham, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2014 at his home after a long illness. He was the husband of the late M. Claire (Cunningham) Sylvia.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Manuel J. & Mary (Silva) Sylvia, he graduated from Dartmouth High School and attended Northeastern University.
Mr. Sylvia was town accountant for the Town of Wareham for 27 years. He also served as town accountant for the towns of Carver and Marshfield. Mr. Sylvia also served as selectmen for the Town of Wareham from 1989 to 1995.
Mr. Sylvia was a World War II veteran and served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 220 – Wareham and the Wareham – New Bedford Lodge of Elks No. 73. Mr. Sylvia was also a frequent volunteer at Sacred Heart Seminary and was a bingo caller for several organizations in the area.
Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He is survived by his two sons; Bruce D. Sylvia of Northampton and Paul J. Sylvia and his wife Nancy of Sandwich; three daughters, Marsha Haskell, widow of the late Daniel Haskell of Wareham; Patricia Dipasqua and her husband Andy of Buzzards Bay and Pam Franklin and her husband Gil “Dobie” of Marion; ten grandchildren, Brian Haskell, Stephanie Haskell Davis, Michael Sylvia, Allison Sylvia, Amy Dipasqua Jope, Peter Dipasqua, Amanda Dipasqua Curtis, and Jessica Franklin Russo, Nicole Franklin Kelley and Michelle Franklin and 12 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by two sisters, the late Bernice and Hilda Sylvia.
His funeral will be from the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway (Rt. 28), Wareham on Monday at 11 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick’s Church, High St., Wareham at noon. Interment will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Wareham.
Visiting hours will be Sunday, Jan. 4 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
