Muriel L. Smith, 95, of Wareham, passed away on Friday, December 11, 2020 at Nemasket Healthcare Center in Middleboro. She was the wife of the late Ausby Smith.

She was born on November 18, 1925 in Wareham to Andrew and Edith (Leggett) Tiernan. She attended Wareham school, and while in high school, she met a handsome soldier from North Carolina stationed at Camp Edwards.  She married that soldier, Ausby “Hub” Smith, and they were together until his death in 1980.

In her early married life, she worked many years for A.D. Makepeace as a screener and packer. She also worked as a bakery manager for Angelo’s Supermarket, and in later years as a quality control inspector for Ocean Spray.

Muriel enjoyed bowling for 20 years in the Coffee and Donuts League in Buzzards Bay and all her many friends there.

Muriel was predeceased by her beloved pet bird, “Spike”; her parents, her husband, her sister Margaret Svendsen, her three brothers, Andrew Tiernan, Jr., Frederick Tiernan and Raymond Tiernan, and her great-grandson Liam Eiland.

She is survived by her three daughters, Rebecca Carey and Kurt Johnson of AZ, Noreen Messina and her husband Joe of FL and Carver, and Bonnie Gorgone and her husband Tom of TN; her beloved grandson and caretaker Jason Stuart and his spouse Michael Trembley of W. Wareham; six other grandchildren, Dr. Emily Fox and her husband Justin of TX, Dr. Meaghan Carey Eiland and her husband Jason of NM, Laurie Stuart Sciotto and her husband Frank of Plymouth, George Stuart III and his wife Anna of Wareham, Scott Rondelli and his wife Sonya of FL, and Daniel Gorgone and his wife Kerry of TN; 9 great grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, her sister-in-law Barbara Tiernan of W. Wareham and many nieces and nephews.

Her graveside service will be held on Wednesday, December 16, 2020 at Center Cemetery, Tihonet Rd., Wareham at 10 AM.
