NESN boating show sails into Wareham

Sep 8, 2014

Soon, people all over New England will get a glimpse of what life is like for boaters in Wareham.

On Monday morning, filming started in Wareham for an episode of New England Boating TV, which airs on NESN as well as on the Aqua Channel. Each show visits a different New England seaside destination and spotlights people, places, and things that make the locations interesting to boaters and their families.

“It’s a family show with a little bit for everyone,” said co-host Parker Kelley. “We give people a little taste of why this is a destination to look into.”

Tom Richardson, who’s from Mattapoisett, is the show's other co-host, and he said they chose Wareham because of his familiarity with the area and because of its allure.

“It’s an intriguing spot—it’s an unsung sort of place,” said Richardson. “It’s got a lot of things going for it. Our show likes to get off the beaten path—we can’t always shoot in the Newports of the world. And I’ve got a lot of love for Wareham. I know what it has to offer boaters. It’s a place I’ve always felt great about.”

As of Monday afternoon, the cast and a crew (including Producer/Director Gene Allen and Intern/Camera Operator Tommy Costello) had interviewed Harbormaster Garry Buckminster, who took them for a tour of Onset Bay and the Wareham River. Selectman Chair Alan Slavin accompanied them for most of the trip, and showed them around Onset Village as well.

“Hopefully it gives people an idea that this is a place that they can do a lot of different things," said Slavin. "It gives the tourism business a kickstart. Any time you can get yourself some exposure, it has a positive impact on tourism."

“We try to bring that destination to life,” said Richardson. “And we like to show viewers where they can dock and dine.”

He said they're also planning to shoot a segment devoted to fishing in the area, which is often one of the most challenging parts of their job.

“We’ve caught some big fish, and we’ve caught some ugly fish,” he said. “The false albacore just showed up in the area, so we’re hoping that goes well.”

Richardson, who’s been involved with boating his whole life, said they try to film a different destination every week, and that they’d recently shot episodes in Falmouth and Quincy.

The half hour show on NESN also accompanies a magazine by the same name as well as a website.

Kelley, who’s a lifelong boater as well, said that they’ve filmed in all six New England states.

“We’ve gone everywhere,” said Kelley, noting that they always try to keep the segments upbeat and energetic. “It’s a fun, fast-paced show. We keep it moving.”

Kelley said that one of their primary goals is to get people out of their comfort zones when it comes where they boat to.

“Hopefully it inspires them to take their boat out of their own harbor and go somewhere new,” she said. “It’s cool. It’s an adventure every time. I don’t think we’re ever going to run out of destinations in New England.”

Richardson said that of late, the Town of Wareham has made an effort to promote boating in the area.

Slavin said those efforts include a new launch service that transports people between their boats and Onset Pier, as well as improvements to docking areas and a wider availability of moorings.

"Knowing they have that [mooring] service available is important to boaters," said Slavin.

“It’s a very diverse place that a lot of boaters aren't aware of,” he said. "The town made a big effort to bring in boaters, and there are some great transient accommodations. If people want to get a mooring for a few hours or a night, they can, and it’s priced right. It allows boaters to come in. There are a lot of great facilities and more on the way.”

Episodes from the new season of New England Boating TV will begin to air in October on Monday nights at 7 p.m.
