Stephen Paulus: Sea Portraits

Paulus uses layers of sound to portray the sea, taking us from sunrise to moonlight. An important American composer, Paulus is widely performed and commissioned. He died in October 2014 at age 65. This work was commissioned by the NBSO in 2005 for our 90th anniversary celebration.

Sergei Rachmaninoff: Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini

A summation of all Rachmaninoff’s skills as a composer. Each of the 24 variations is a brilliant piece of the whole, including one of the most recognizable themes in all of Romantic classical music. Incredibly challenging for both orchestra and soloist, pianist Anne-Marie McDermott is featured.

Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No. 7 in A Major

Beethoven himself considered this symphony one of his best works. Of his nine symphonies, the Seventh is in many ways a positive regression, an assimilation of everything Beethoven had explored up to that point. Its rhythmic energy compels people to move and prompted Richard Wagner to describe it as the “apotheosis of the dance.”
