New map! Black bear moves on to Marion
After spending some time in West Wareham last week, a black bear appears to have moved on to Marion.
The Marion Police Department confirmed a sighting of the bear off Partridge Place in north Marion on Monday around 9:15 a.m. According to a press release issued by Chief Lincoln Miller, the bear was eating from a bird feeder in a resident's backyard, then ran off once it noticed a human.

The Massachusetts Environmental Police last week confirmed reports of the bear sighting in West Wareham. Reginald Zimmerman, a representative from the Massachusetts Environmental Police, said “there's a high probability" that the bear is the same one the agency has been tracking after it was first spotted in Attleboro three weeks ago.

What to do if you encounter a bear:
- Do not approach bears in the wild. Bears will usually flee from people and move away silently. If you approach from downwind, a bear may not immediately recognize you as a human and may be curious until it scents you. Make the animal aware of you by clapping, talking, or making other sounds.
- Unless absolutely necessary, do not throw food items, packs, or other items to decoy bears which may approach you. This action teaches the bear how to get people to give food items to it.
- Black bears will sometimes "bluff-charge" people when they are attempting to protect or raid a food source, when cornered or threatened, or when courting or mating. Do not run or crouch down. Stand your ground and then move slowly away.
