New Wareham High athletic director named

Sep 18, 2012

A Wareham High School dean of students has been named interim athletic director.

Steven Rumbolt, who serves as dean of students for the class of 2014, will take the reins from Marc Loranger, who resigned to take a position as assistant principal of Plymouth South High School.

"I want to continue the things that the previous athletic directors have done," said Rumbolt, noting that he plans to organize the popular captains' lunches, which help team captains in their leadership roles. "Once I get my feet wet, I'll get a feel for what's possible [and] what's not possible for the direction that the athletic program is going to go."

Rumbolt, who serves as the "faculty manager" for the Athletic Department, has worked closely with Loranger over the past year, and will continue working with him until Loranger leaves on Sept. 19, said Wareham High School Principal Scott Palladino.

"Steve [Rumbolt] is familiar with athletics and the Athletic Department, and will do a great job," Palladino wrote in an e-mail.

Rumbolt has worked at Wareham High for more than 18 years as a physical education teacher and coach. He has coached hockey as a volunteer, as well as varsity volleyball, varsity tennis, and varsity baseball, he said.

Rumbolt will serve as interim athletic director for one year while continuing to work as dean of students. A permanent director will then be named.

"When I left the private sector 24 years ago, I told my vice-president that my goal was to be an athletic director," Rumbolt said. "I'm very excited about it, and I'm looking forward to working with everybody."
