Nexus athletes score big at international tournament

Apr 19, 2011

On April 17, three members of the Nexus Martial Arts & Fitness competition team took home medals during the Open International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation Championship in Harlem, New York.

Representing the Nexus team were John Murphy of New Bedford who won the gold medal in his division, Jim Manning of Marion who won silver, and Marcio Silva of Rochester who won a bronze medal.

The New York Open Championship draws top athletes from around the world at each belt level and weight class. All have previously won gold medals at large regional events such as North American Grappling Association and Grapplers Quest, but the New York Open Championship tournaments are considered the most competitive in the world.

“I am really proud of the hard work these guys put into training for this tournament. This was a big step up in terms of the level of competition, and to have all three come home with medals was great to see and inspiring for everyone at the school,” said Nexus Chief Instructor and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt, Stephen Whittier.

Murphy, who says that he is in the best shape of his life since he began training in jiu-jitsu and mixed martial arts, cites the coaching and team atmosphere at Nexus as keys to his success.

“I appreciate all training I've gotten from Nexus,” he said. “I worked hard to win at the New York Open, but it wouldn't have been possible without all of the other students training with me and pushing me, and especially all the great instruction I've gotten.”
