No pawning at Main Street pawn shop
Anyone hoping to pawn an item at Gateway Gold and Pawn on Main Street will have to look elsewhere for the time being, according to the Board of Selectmen.
After finding numerous errors in the application for a pawnbroker's license, Selectmen ruled Tuesday that Gateway Gold and Pawn can no longer pawn items, but can still sell "junk" as the business currently holds a junk dealer's license.
According to Selectmen, the business certificate issued for the property in March 2010 expired in March of 2014 and was not renewed.
The application for the the license was brought forward by Gateway Gold and Pawn building owner and former Finance Committee member Dominic Cammarano, who was present at the hearing on Tuesday.
Selectmen said Cammarano had no authority to file the application, as the officers listed for Gateway Gold and Pawn corporation are Sara Forrest, his daughter, and Robert Forrest. Cammarano said he believed he had updated that information to include himself as an officer, but Selectmen said that the state and town records did not reflect that assertion.
"The state has very specific regulations for pawnshops," said Selectmen Patrick Tropeano. "Pawn businesses by statue cannot operate without a license."
Additional problems with the application included confusion over whether Gateway Gold and Pawn was listed as an "Inc" or an "LLC," a Limited Liability Corporation.
There was also an issue of whether the address listed for the business on the license, 294 Main St., referred to the current building or the adjacent building that burned down in 2011.
Selectmen advised Cammarano to get his paperwork in order before coming back to Selectmen at their next meeting on July 28, where he could potentially apply for the license.
