OBA hopes to finish summer on a high note with inaugural Kite Festival
Spend an afternoon on Onset Beach during the summer and you're sure to see a kite or two flying in the sea breeze.
On Saturday, the Onset Bay Association hopes to fill the skies over Onset Beach with kites, as part of its inaugural Onset Kite Festival.
The Kite Festival will take place Saturday, Sept. 5, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in front of the Bathhouse on Onset Beach. The event will include a kite flying workshop, a build-your-own-kite program, stunt kite demonstrations, prizes, face painting, snacks and souvenirs.
Paul Ciccotelli, one of the event organizers, said the idea for the festival has been kicking around for awhile.
"When I first joined the Onset Bay Association, the first things I heard about were the chalk festival and kite festival," he said.
Ciccotelli said he knew where to reach out to find help.
He partnered with Eric Guillory, owner of Cape Cod Collectibles, a hobby shop located at 3090 Cranberry Highway in East Wareham.
Being a all-around hobby enthusiast, Guillory was able to find someone to come and do stunt kite demonstrations for the festival, and is also supplying most of the volunteer force for the event.
Ciccotellis said he wanted to maintain a local feel to the festival, and refrained from having any vendors at the event so that people would patronize the local businesses and restaurants.
"Since it's the end of the season, a lot of the people will be residents or people in the community anyway," he said.
The Onset Kite Festival is a free event. Attendees can bring their own kites to fly or buy one at the festival.
"I think it's a really worthwhile project," Ciccotelli said. "It'll be a fun thing to start off."
