Officials: Keep parades safe, stop throwing candy from vehicles
Due to safety concerns, candy won't be thrown from parade vehicles to kids on the sidelines this year.
In what he called his "Grinch report," Town Administrator Derek Sullivan explained at the Selectmen meeting on Tuesday that tossing the candy from trucks and floats is too dangerous. In the upcoming Wareham Village Association Christmas parade on Dec. 2, candy must be handed to people by those who are walking in the parade.
"Last year it was thrown from vehicles and kids were running out in the road to get it," Sullivan said.
He said it's not worth someone getting hurt to grab candy.
"I was petrified driving last year," Selectmen Chair Peter Teitelbaum said of the Christmas parade. "Watching the candy plink two feet away from the wheels and watching the kids dive for it."
