Old cars, new cars, and everything in between at Cape Verdean Festival fundraiser

More than two dozen lovingly looked-after cars and trucks lined the lot at the Dudley L. Brown VFW in Onset on Saturday for the Onset Cape Verdean Festival Committee's first ever Spectacular Spooky car show.

"I'm amazed," Mike Roderick of the Cape Verdean Festival Committee said as he surveyed the cars in trucks in the parking lot. "The first year, you don't know how it's going to go."

The show was also open to motorcycles, but Roderick noted that windy weather likely discouraged some riders from entering the show.

"I wouldn't be riding in this," Roderick said with a smile and a shake of his head.

The show was the second of new fundraisers the committee is using to raise the approximately $38,000 needed yearly to put on the big August festival. A yard sale last weekend was also successful, Roderick said.

"We just wanted to try something different," Roderick noted.

After the committee pays its bills, it uses leftover funds for scholarships and for other causes the committee chooses. Previously, it donated funds to help battered women in Cape Verde.
