Old Company Store holds holiday event
The Old Company Store’s 5th annual “Elf on the Shelf” Christmas fundraiser displayed the best turn out ever in the Old Company Store’s history for the Toys for Tots toy drive.
The store’s adapted catch phrase, “Our Community Strong,” is inspired from a proud customer. The customer got the phrase from the store’s abbreviation: OCS.
That catch phrase has never rung more clear than on Sunday, Dec. 8th.
From 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., families enjoyed all of the classical Christmas cheer, activities and entertainment made possible by wonderful local sponsors, vendors and, of course, the generosity of the community.
The store has been fundraising for Toys for Tots throughout the holiday season in preparation for this event.
Children could earn, download online, decorate and wear an Elf on the Shelf Badge -- from the Elf on the Shelf Activity Kit -- after doing a good deed like donating a toy or canned good. The badges were also printed out and available if one donated a toy or can directly in the store.
Those wearing the badge at the event were given a present from Mrs. Claus -- either a candy cane or wooden nickel, which were redeemable in the store for penny candy.
A giant plush giraffe raffle also took place through the Melissa and Doug Toys for Tots donations, and the winner will be announced on the Old Company Store Facebook page the morning of Monday, Dec. 9.
Happy children adorned face paint from “Artsy Parties” and had bellies full of “Wicked Good Kettle Corn.” They learned all about the Elf on The Shelf on a Clydesdales-driven sleigh ride through the Elves Enchanted Courtyard. They read the very story that began it all, “The Elf on The Shelf: A Christmas Tradition,” and watched the silly elves in hiding come out to play.
The store also featured the Mermaids on Cape Cod Bus, numerous vendors like The Mad Batter Bakery, sponsors like Cool 102 and 106 WCOD radio stations and splendid entertainment.
The Show Stoppers, a local nonprofit travel choir, rocked all throughout the day. The group is comprised of 29 talented kids ranging from ages six to 18. Members come from anywhere from Westport to Wareham. They sing for local venues, public venues, nursing homes and community service throughout the year.
“I’m the craziest Show Stopper there is,” proclaimed Sam Guillotte of Rochester, “This is fun, and the best part is the food!”
Danny Szyndler, employee of Cup 2 Café in East Wareham seems to agree.
“We’re excited and jittery. It’s a lot of sugar,” he said.
Other vendors and sponsors included Crazy For Cookies of Wareham, Wicked Kickin’ Savory Cheesecake of New Bedford and K Kids from Kiwanis International.
“I want to extend a huge ‘thank you’ to all the OCS staff, the sponsors, vendors and especially the residents of Mayflower Ridge Drive who decorated their houses along the path of the Elves Enchanted Courtyard,” said a thankful Shari Aussant, Old Company Store employer and event planner. “The support of this community is incredible and we are so proud of this neighborhood.”
The Old Company Store was overwhelmed by the abundance of toys and generosity raised in this year’s Elf on The Shelf fundraiser, as well as matched the toy donation.
The Mermaids on Cape Cod Bus will be delivering the toys to Cool 102 Toys for Tots “Stuff A Bus” on Dec. 15, and they encourage donations all the way up until that date.
