Onset Bay Association hosts first-ever open house

Oct 21, 2016

Four people signed up to join the Onset Bay Association within the first hour of its open house, which was the first one the group has held.

At least that's what Kat Jones, who's served as the Onset Bay Association's president for the past year and has been involved for nearly 15 years prior, and other long-term members recall.

"I wasn't sure what to expect," said Jones about the turnout.

Though the association is in need of more members to carry out all the operations for the numerous events it hosts throughout the year, recruiting wasn't the only evening's only goal.

"We're teaching people what we do and what we offer. A lot of people think, 'oh the town runs this," said Jones. "We put on a majority of events in town. Just to educate people is part of the goal here."

The nonprofit runs solely on donations and events are administered by volunteers. It has hosted the Summer of Love concert series during which free concerts were given at the Lillian Gregerman Band Shell on Wednesdays, the Onset Blues Festival, Illumination Night, the Chalk Festival, and movies on Thursdays, just to name a few events.

Members were present to explain to the curious how they do what they do and why they do it. Interested volunteers could stop by the office on 4 Union Ave. For more information visit the association's website.

The organization will have a booth during "Volunteer, Wareham" on Oct. 22 at the Emmanuel Church of the Nazarene to answer more questions.
