Onset boutique Artisana has something for everyone

Apr 13, 2010

From handmade jewelry to soaps, photo albums and even dog collars, Onset Village boutique Artisana caters to all tastes.

"I wanted to provide quality, locally-made products at a reasonable price," said owner Kat Jones, who makes jewelry and other handicrafts for the shop.

Artisana features the work of about 35 local artists, Jones said. There is clothing and accessories, souvenirs, and everything in between, including potholders made by Jones' mother.

Jones also offers henna body art, and licensed massage therapist Letrice Lopes offers massages in a room separate from the retail area.

She opened Artisana about five years ago and moved to her current location at 239 Onset Ave. last November. The move allowed her to offer more wares, as well as classes and workshops.

"I always have something going on," she said.

She opens the shop to a yoga class on Monday and Thursday evenings. A scrapbooking class is scheduled for April 21, and a presentation of Arbonne natural skincare products will take place on April 25.

"I like to think I've created an environment," said Jones, lounging on a window seat at the front of the store. "I spend most of my time here, so I want it to be a cool place to hang out."

And many locals do stop by to hang out and shoot the breeze with Jones, who is involved in many aspects of the community. She is on the board of the Onset Bay Association and helps coordinate the Onset Summer of Love concert series.

"I just never know who's going to stumble in that door," she said.

Between the artwork, the workshops, and the people, Artisana is a unique shop with something for everyone.

"My mother always says, 'don't be different just to be different, be different because you are different,'" Jones said.

Artisana is open six days per week, from "11ish to 5ish," Jones said. It is closed on Tuesdays. For general information or to hear about classes and workshops, call Kat Jones at 508-725-2657.
